You may be wondering how the blue lace layers were formed. It's truly amazing: agates typically form inside bubbles or cavities of igneous (volcanic) basalt and, over time, are filled with layers of water with high concentrations of silica. The water is slowly evaporated, forming a layer of silica gelatin, and then a solid layer is formed. This is a very slow process, and each layer contains different impurities, thus forming different colored bands. Fantastic, right?
